A Piece That Calls For New Beginnings

Anton Bruckner’s works are magisterial, powerful, and grounded monuments of tonal power. The Austrian’s seventh symphony, one of his most famous, has the power, but it has what some of his other pieces lack: melody. It’s nostalgic and beautifully heartwarming. Laid over pulsing winds and brass and smooth strings, it is nothing other thoughtful. The first movement is a highlight.

Germany’s Doing Something Right

german-flag-map(2)

The United States isn’t the only country experiencing a decrease in interest in classical music in schoolchildren. Germany’s facing the problem as well. However, a project led by the NDR Symphony and conductor Thomas Hengelbrock aims to change this lack of engagement. This autumn, millions of German students in 5th through 12th grades will experience a performance of Dvorak’s New World Symphony.
